“’The Tempest‘ is a vital text for right now – it really addresses our present problems,” said Hale Gurland, a long-standing member of University Settlement’s Board of Directors who has been instrumental in planning the production.“It’s about power, and about how to give it up for the greater good. At this political moment, and not just in this country, we are in the Tempest. With this play, we hope to engage our audience in a conversation about how we all need to work together.”
“Theater is an essential way to inspire this kind of dialogue because it is fundamentally about collaboration, and it lies at the heart of our approach: we build all of the elements of the production together, enhancing each other’s performances for the greater good of the whole,” said Craig Bacon, Artistic Director of New Place Players. “Our company is thrilled to present this fresh spin on a timeless classic, an embodiment of Shakespeare’s language and live music that speaks directly to this moment with a clarity that contemporary audiences can understand and viscerally enjoy.”
