University Settlement’s Family Child Care Network expands into Brooklyn

NEW YORK, NY August 18, 2020 – University Settlement has expanded its Family Child Care Network into Brooklyn, the agency announced today.

“Since 1886, University Settlement has created innovative services for children and families, and our Family Child Care Network has worked with home-based providers on the Lower East Side for over 50 years,” said Melissa Aase, Executive Director, University Settlement. “Our early childhood education programs have been operational in Brooklyn for more than ten years now, and we’re thrilled to begin working with home-based providers borough-wide.”

The network, which previously expanded into Washington Heights in 2014, partners with licensed home-based childcare providers with years of experience in the field to offer year-round, full-day, Monday – Friday services for children aged 2 months – 4 years. Our high-quality educational curriculum models center-based childcare, and participating children receive continual developmental assessments and screenings.

As it expands, University Settlement’s Family Child Care Network will continue to operate in strict accordance with New York State and City safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Services are offered in English, Spanish, and Chinese, and families and providers receive additional support through a partnership with University Settlement’s Early Head Start.

“Our diverse, experienced, and collaborative network approach helps home-based childcare providers enhance their offerings in terms of health, safety, and educational approach,” said Michelle Paige, Associate Executive Director of Early Childhood Education, University Settlement. “As we grow our network, we’re also deepening our commitment to ensuring that all New Yorkers have access to high-quality childcare, regardless of income.”

About University Settlement

University Settlement partners with 40,000 New Yorkers on the Lower East Side and in Brooklyn every year to build on their strengths as they achieve healthy, stable, and remarkable lives. For over 130 years, we’ve collaborated with our communities to pioneer highly effective programs that fight poverty and systemic inequality. Established in 1886 as the first Settlement House in the United States, we bring the values of that movement into the 21st century by meeting New Yorkers where they live, listening to their perspectives, recognizing their excellence, understanding them as complete individuals, and creating space for them to organize. Joining together with our neighbors to advocate for justice and equality, we help build community strength.

We work with New Yorkers of all ages. We infuse a commitment to civic engagement, equity, and communal action into each of our programs, which include early childhood education, mental health, and wellness, benefits assistance and eviction prevention, adult literacy and education, healthy aging, community and recreation centers, performing and visual arts, and youth development.
