Professional Development

ServiceWorks is a brand new program offered at jointly through our partner organization The Door at our Ingersoll Community Center, Campos Plaza and Atlantic Terminal Community Center sites. This program prepares young adults ages 16-24 for a more successful professional future! This is a national program supported by the Citi Foundation, AmeriCorps and Points of Light – but we're the only location in NYC to offer this exciting new opportunity.

Participants - or Service Scholars, as we call them - will receive training in leadership and workplace skills, get support in building networks and connections and participate in volunteer service projects. This is a FREE, ten-week program that will give you the skills you need for a brighter future. Each week, you'll develop new skills and spend time with a professional mentor, in addition to participating in regular volunteer opportunities.

Service Scholars will commit to spending three hours per week on this program. During this time, Service Scholars will develop professionally, spend time with their mentors and participate in service learning. Success Coaches (volunteers) will spend 1-2 hours per week meeting with their assigned Service Scholars. They will also be encouraged to participate in service projects. Finally, the program does include several major days of service, including September 11 and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

  • Research shows that new workforce entrants with their high school diplomas lacked many skills that are viewed as very important by a majority of employers, including professionalism, teamwork, and oral communications
  • Volunteering increases your chance of finding a job
  • It's FREE and gives you a chance to build a network of potential employers in the future
