Children's Corner

In 2010, University Settlement expanded into Brooklyn by taking over Children's Corner. This unique site provides critical early intervention and educational supports to form the foundation for a lifetime of learning to 170 children in the community every year.

The center provides a full-year, full-day program (8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) with eleven classrooms for children ages 2 to 4. Each classroom includes a head teacher, assistant teacher and teacher's aide, providing a balance of child-centered and teacher-directed experiences. The spacious, well-maintained facility includes computers and learning materials, a library, a rooftop playground, and a garden.

Children's Corner uses Creative Curriculum, which helps children build independence, self-confidence and self-control; increases fine and gross motor skills; develops problem solving skills and critical thinking; and builds communication and listening skills.

We also integrate enrichment activities, including:

  • Music and creative movement classes
  • Yoga
  • Daily indoor and outdoor play
  • Field trips to museums, the zoo, etc.

Children's Corner services are offered on a sliding scale to income-eligible families.

Children with special needs are offered the additional support they need to succeed. Small, therapeutic peer playgroups are used to address simple behavioral problems. Children found to have learning disabilities or physical or psychological problems are provided with individualized speech therapy, occupational therapy and/or psychological counseling.

The Center also provides workshops and education for parents, social service advocacy and referrals, and parent involvement through committees and volunteer opportunities.

Children's Corner is ALWAYS enrolling. If you're ready to get started, fill out our application now!
