Roots&Branches Theater

Roots&Branches Theater (R&B) unites professional performers and community members to create and produce original plays that challenge stereotypes about age and aging, build understanding between generations, and celebrate the wisdom, energy and creativity of elders. The ensemble consists of "Roots" (elder, non-professional performers) and "Branches" (youth and young professional actors).

R&B tours performances of new plays about intergenerational issues to senior and community centers, schools, and other venues.  Since 1990, more than 200 actors and 150 elders have worked with R&B in hundreds of workshops and performances, performing for nearly 40,000 under-served multicultural, multi-generational individuals.

R&B continues its work in the community after the performance is over by providing theater workshops to its multi-generational audiences. Through storytelling and theater exercises, R&B workshops create bonds between seniors and youth who do not have the opportunity to connect in their everyday lives.

Roots&Branches is always looking for:

  1. Older adults that want to try performance in a safe, fun environment;
  2. Young performers interested in working with senior communities, or the intersection of art, social work, and social justice;
  3. Arts educators that work with senior and youth populations;
  4. Senior center directors and program managers that would like to bring R&B performances and programs to their community.
