New York Youth Movement Collaborative
New York Youth Movement Collaborative (NYMC) is a dance collaborative started by two choreographers/dancers/teaching artists, Ehizoje Azeke and Marguerite Hemmings. NYMC provides more access to professional, collaborative experiences in the arts that are free for young artists. NYMC started in 2012 as an all volunteer, six-week summer dance intensive sponsored by University Settlement. It is now expanding into schools and after-school programs, facilitating a more empowered and sustainable framework for arts programming. NYMC addresses inequalities in the dance and artist community by building partnerships between dancers with formal and informal training, emerging and established artists, and lastly between artists and community-based organizations. We provide classes in different dance styles taught by various working artists in the community, as well as classes in solo composition and movement exploration. Most importantly, we share what has been created. NYMC ultimately looks to empower one another as artists and share opportunities and resources through our united passion to create art for art's sake.
