Thanksgiving Round-Up

Dec 1, 2011 | University Settlement | categories: Celebrations

There's so much to be thankful for at University Settlement, and last week was no exception! With celebrations taking place in sites from Manhattan to Brooklyn, University Settlement staff, volunteers and program participants shared in the giving spirit and enjoyed a healthy dose of holiday food. If you couldn't make it to all our celebrations – fear not! We've rounded up the best of Thanksgiving at University Settlement this year, so check it out, and share your holiday stories with US:

Top to bottom: Turkey donation from bOb Bar; Giving Thanks mural at The Door; Senior Center Thanksgiving Luncheon.
  1. University Settlement Staff Gratitude Party: On Monday night University Settlement staff showed their gratitude with a staff organized Gratitude Party and Improv Performance Salon! Staff mingled and participated in improvisational games with settlement Artists-in-Residence and performers from the People's Improv Theater.
  2. Senior Center Thanksgiving Luncheon: Members of our Senior Center enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving Lunch - and the celebrating didn't stop there. On Monday they received a very generous donation of 125 turkeys from our neighbors bOb Bar. That's one turkey for each year University Settlement has been providing services in the Lower East Side!
  3. The Door's Annual Giving Thanks Dinner: On Tuesday night Door Members enjoyed a warm Thanksgiving Dinner served by The Door's dedicated staff members. Young people made Thanksgiving themed art projects and enjoyed performance by The Door's Vocal and Dance Intensives - including a rendition of "We Are the World."
  4. Pay-it-Forward Thanksgiving Feast: On Thanksgiving Day the Ingersoll Community Center hosted a Thanksgiving Feast with volunteers packing into the center at 9:00AM to prepare hundreds of FREE meals for Fort Greene residents. Their "Pay it Forward" feast included farm-fresh ingredients from local farmers, Glebocki Farms, and was made possible through a partnership with the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project.
  5. Houston Street Center Annual Canned Food Drive: The Houston Street Center gave back to their neighbors this year by donating canned food to The Bowery Mission. Thanks to everyone who donated food and the HSC STRIDE Leadership Program for running the drive!

Two comments:

Each time I read about the wonderful work done by the University Settlement, I think about how my grandparents received assistance from you almost 100 years ago! I am so grateful to now be on the giving end, and if it wasn't for all the hard work started within your walls, my family and I would not have as much to be thankful for today!
