A Statement on Trans Rights from our Executive Director

Feb 23, 2017 | Melissa Aase, Executive Director | categories: Advocacy

President Trump thinks transgender rights aren't a federal matter. We disagree.

Yesterday President Trump rescinded federal guidance that ensured that transgender students have the right to be treated according to their preferred gender identity, including the right to use the bathroom of their choosing at school. He and Attorney General Sessions claimed it was a matter for the states to decide.

The civil rights of all people should be guaranteed, no matter what state you live in.

Transgender and LGB youth are already dangerously marginalized. 75% of them report feeling unsafe in school and they are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.

At University Settlement, we will always stand with all youth to create together a safe and accepting place where they can be themselves and thrive. At University Settlement, we choose love, not hate – and we believe in civil rights for all.
