Our Climate, Our City, Our Future: Hurricane Sandy One Year Later on the Lower East Side

Community Conversations on Environmental Justice & Rebuilding

In collaboration with the Center for Social Inclusion and the Pratt Institute Programs for Sustainable Planning & Development

Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at 6:00pm

New York City is sinking. Or, more accurately, sea levels are rising. We see more super storms and wild weather events that hurt us all. And yet, communities of color and economically struggling communities are not equally able to rebuild and implement innovations to make us all stronger. People of color make up almost two-thirds of the City's population. As places of innovation, not just tribulation, communities of color in and around the City are integral to its future.

Recognizing the opportunity to build a prosperous and inclusive future, the Center for Social Inclusion presents in collaboration with the Pratt Institute Programs for Sustainable Planning & Development, a series of town hall community conversations in New York City areas most impacted by Hurricane Sandy - the Lower East Side, Brooklyn, and the Rockaways. The conversations will focus on our common interest in a racially inclusive set of recovery, adaptation, mitigation and planning strategies to address the effects of climate change. They will be informative and multi-disciplinary with planners, environmental activists and community leaders, as well as artists illuminating how art can play an interpretive role in expressing and influencing perceptions of climate change.
