A 2015-2016 Artist-in-Residence Project

Dive deep into the origin and practice of dapping, the intricate handshake ritual that serves as a greeting, usually between black men. Composed like a musical fugue, crescendoing into complex repetitions, this dance and visual art installation explores the inter-generational history of the dap - originally created by black GIs during the Vietnam War - as well as the ever-relevant issue of Blackness relating to masculinity, image, and existence in the United States.

Together, photographer LaMont Hamilton and André M. Zachery of Renegade Performance Group collaborate with young men of color from University Settlement programs to create this new performance work.
