Every year, the University Settlement family gets just a little bit bigger, and we're thrilled to announce that we've added a new early childcare center to our growing family of interwoven sites: Park Slope North/Helen Owen Carey Child Development Center. This Brooklyn-based center provides a nurturing education environment for children ages 2-5.
Park Slope North supports children's development by valuing children's individual needs, by helping them to live, learn and work cooperatively and by promoting their self-esteem as members of their families as well as the child care community. This full-year program is open from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, and has character beyond measure!
Using creative curriculum as a framework, Park Slope North supports children's development and learning through a play-based curriculum. Children explore concepts of science, math, language and literacy, as well as cooperation and collaboration with their community through intentional activities, carefully planned by the teaching staff. Children's input and interests are considered and discussed in the planning process as well to fully enhance their experience.
In addition to a beautiful rooftop playground, Park Slope North also has a children's garden in their backyard, where the young students experience planting and harvesting tasty vegetables. And that kind of in-the-dirt attitude is part of what makes this new family member so special: they're all about the hands on work. For example, with some help from their teachers, children make their own playdough. This experience allows them opportunities to explore and develop math and science concepts while using language and working cooperatively.
Another unique facet of this Center is its student population; because of its neighborhood in Brooklyn, it's perfectly situated to serve a diverse community with dedicated, caring staff. Likewise, they have spots for families of all economic backgrounds, including those that use ACS or HRA vouchers to assist with childcare payments, as well as those that qualify for universal pre-kindergarten discounts.
As we welcome Park Slope North into the fold, we encourage you to stay up to date on them in the coming weeks.
