Long-time volunteer Johnny Yap was recently recognized by the Senate of the State of New York and the NYC Department of the Aging with an official proclamation!
Johnny has volunteered with our Neighborhood Center at 189 Allen for nearly 15 years, serving on the advisory council, assisting with translations, instructing wellness classes, and more. The proclamation was given to Johnny at a special ceremony on September 18 by State Senator Squadron.
The full text of the proclamation is below:
Honoring Johnny Yap in Recognition of His Service to the Lower East Side Senior Community
Whereas, a great community is only as great as those individuals that provide exemplary service to their communities and,
Whereas, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend Johnny Yap on the occasion of recognition of his service to the Lower East Side senior community and,
Whereas, Johnny Yap immigrated to New York City from Malaysia with his wife and son 440 years ago and has since moved to the Lower East Side and,
Whereas, Johnny Yap has been an active member of the University Settlement Senior Center for 14 years and,
Whereas, Johnny Yap has served as President of the Senior Advisory Council, a wellness instructor, front desk volunteer, and volunteer translator for the organization and,
Whereas, the New York State Office of Aging recently recognized Johnny Yap for his many years of volunteerism for the Lower East Side senior community and,
Whereas, it is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend those individuals for the edification and emulation of others, now, therefore, be it
Resolved that I, State Senator Daniel Squadron, recognize that in Johnny Yap, we have an individual worthy of our highest respect and esteem, and be it further
Resolved that a copy of this proclamation be transmitted to Johnny Yap in recognition of his service to the Lower East Side senior community.
