The Creative Center at University Settlement is in the top of its class - we've been nominated for a 2014 CLASSY Award in Patient and Family Services for our Hospital Artist-in-Residence Program!
The CLASSYs, now in their fifth year, represent a year-long initiative to identify and celebrate leaders in the social sector. Nominees are progressive, forward-thinking programs that take risks to create better, stronger communities. Nominees are chosen for their monumental, impactful work across a variety of service sectors, including active duty and veteran services, disaster relief, health services and more.
Our nomination recognizes our talented artists-in-residence, offering cancer patients, their families and healthcare staff the opportunity to discover their own creative resources through individualized art-making experiences with a trained artist-in-residence during the treatment process or at the bedside. The program is now located in 26 sites in the New York City metro area and is led by director Robin Glazer. The artists seek to drastically alter the hospital treatment experience of cancer patients by combating boredom, isolation, and fear through creative and expressive activities such as painting, drawing, collage, beading, writing, knitting and more. Patients and staff quickly discover that they are more than their disease as they begin to explore art-making, some for the first time in their lives.
