During the New York State budget battle, once again funding for adult literacy was on the chopping block. Our staff went to Albany, along with many other adult literacy programs, to fight for increased funding in the next fiscal year. Politico helped raise awareness among state legislators, and the end result was that funding for next year not only wasn't cut, it was increased by $500,000.
As Michael Hunter, our Adult Literacy Program Director, pointed out in the article, there are over 3.5 million of our fellow New Yorkers who don't have a high school diploma, English-language proficiency or both. Adult literacy education is their ticket to higher education and a living-wage job.
