Senior Director of Early Childhood Clinical Services and Family Wellness

Supervisor: Associate Executive Director, Early Childhood Programs

Healthy Families is an evidence-based program that offers home-based services to expectant families, beginning prenatally or shortly after the birth of the child. Families who participate in the program are offered long-term home visiting services. The Healthy Families New York Home Visiting Program is a comprehensive prevention program that focuses on the safety of children, by (a) promoting positive parenting skills and parent-child interaction; (b) ensuring optimal prenatal care and child health and development; (c) increasing parents' self-sufficiency; and (d) preventing child abuse and neglect.

Butterflies program impacts the lives of over 800 children under 5 and their families, including those who are enrolled in our early childhood programs, and those who have been referred to us from the community. Many families we serve carry intergenerational trauma and interpersonal difficulties. Our relationship-based, trauma-informed approach supports safety and emotional security for the child and efficacy and agency for the parent as well as consultation and training for our early childhood staff. Crucial to our model is the ability to ensure that access to services is engaging, low risk, and culturally and linguistically appropriate. To reach families most in need of our services, Butterflies offers integrated and layered social-emotional and mental health support services to children under five and their families through a two-pronged approach: services embedded into the USS's early childhood programs, and services extended to the community through outside referrals. Butterflies is funded through a combination of NYC Department of Health and foundation grants.


  • Collaborate closely with the Associate Executive Director for Early Childhood Programs and the administration team (Development, Human Resources, Finance, Facilities and IT) to ensure smooth program operations
  • Oversee the implementation of the Butterflies Program under-five mental health initiative serving children impacted by trauma through parent/child therapy including child-parent psychotherapy, program and child consultations, and parent groups
  • Provide clinical supervision for Butterflies clinicians
  • Accept community referrals and ensure that clinical treatment cases are assigned
  • Lead the process for screening, identifying, referring and planning for interventions for children with social-emotional and behavioral concerns including engaging families and educational staff in planning for children and making plans
  • Ascertain training needs and assist in the identification of appropriate training resources and planning for staff professional development in Butterflies and Early Childhood programs
  • Participate in city wide Early Childhood Mental Health Strategic Work Group. NYU Community Service Plan Coordinating Council and NYC DOH Early Childhood Mental Health Network
  • Provide leadership and clinical guidance to management staff in all aspects of program implementation including quality assessment and outcome measurement for social-emotional and special needs including program self-assessment
  • Collaborate with senior program leadership teams to provide technical support and share mental health best practices for the ECE division including Georgetown model of consultation, Pyramid of Service options, and primary prevention and universality of access and training
  • Maintain reports, administrative and clinical records in accordance with all applicable regulations including Head Start Performance Standards, Early Learn NYC Scope of Work, DOHMH standards
  • Active participation in leadership meetings for Early Childhood Division and University Settlement
  • Participate in policy and advocacy initiatives, and ongoing professional development related to birth to three year olds and the larger early childhood field
  • Oversee all aspects of the programs' management including fiscal oversight, budget development, internal and external audits and program evaluations
  • Facilitate funding sustainability through grant writing and meeting with potential funders; including tracking deliverables and preparing data reports and narratives for Interim and final reports for funding streams
  • Oversee the programs' compliance with all applicable regulations and grant management standards
  • Provide training and consultation to 9th street residence and LEAP: two Door programs serving formerly homeless youth, some of whom are parents
  • Ensure Butterflies staff meet evidence based practice standards in Child Parent Psychotherapy
  • Oversee ParentCorps program at all sites, providing a positive behavior model as a primary prevention population health initiative
  • Assist Article 31 in 0-5 service delivery
  • Manage policy and procedures revisions and compliance for Butterflies
  • Ensure agency wide-data collection for Butterflies
  • Advocate on city and state level for early childhood mental health services
  • Support University Settlement strategic planning to include high quality programming, integration of program with other Settlement programs, engage and support advocacy, and advance racial equity by supporting staff in addressing bias, racism and prejudice
  • Other duties as assigned


  • MSW degree or PhD with LCSW required or MA in Psychology or PsyD required
  • Five years of clinical experience in a mental health setting with an emphasis in the treatment of young children; with knowledge of treatment strategies in the areas of child behavior management and family dynamics
  • Demonstrated experience in service development and implementation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Chinese preferred
  • Endorsed Early Childhood Mental Health Mentor status or eligible

Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week
