Kitchen Aide- Temporary

Supervisor: Program Director


Overview: University Settlement Senior Center, serving Manhattan's Lower East Side offers a robust menu of services to a diverse population of older adults aged 60 and older. The multi-service program provides case assistance, breakfast and lunch, health promotions, recreational and educational activities. Under a new arrangement with the NYC Department for the Aging we have expanded our homebound Meals on Wheels delivery area and are seeking additional staff to assist with food preparation and delivery.


Responsibilities:

  • Under the general instruction of the Program Director and Cook, performs general kitchen duties in the preparation, serving, and clean-up of the Center's breakfast and dining room space. 
  • Operates and cleans a variety of specialized food service equipment, i.e. coffee maker, automatic dishwasher, commercial ovens and mixer, etc.
  • Packs and delivers catered meals for Meltzer Senior Center daily.
  • Ensures safe and proper temperatures for all food items.
  • Assists with any other kitchen aide/ janitorial duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • NYC DOHMH Food Handler's Certificate preferred.
  • Some kitchen and/or cooking experience in a commercial kitchen.
  • Must be able to manually move, pull, carry, push or lift heavy objects or materials (25-40 lbs).
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, climb or balance, sit and reach. 
  • Knowledge of safety, hygiene and sanitary precautions common to the food service industry. 
  • Ability to read, write and speak English, required. (Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Chinese a plus).
  • Friendly and professional demeanor with clients and staff essential.
  • Prior experience working with the elderly a plus.

Hours: Monday-Friday (17 hours/week) *Position will last through June 2018*


Salary: $17.07 per hour
