Office Assistant (Part time)

Overview: University Settlement is one of New York City's most dynamic social justice institutions, with an impressive legacy as the first settlement house in the nation. For 130 years, University Settlement has been an anchor in the low-income and immigrant communities where we work, offering pioneering programs in early childhood care and education, youth development, eviction prevention, literacy, theater and visual arts, senior services, and mental health. Each year, we engage over 40,000 New Yorkers through our network of 30 sites in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Our mission is to empower residents by building on their strengths through comprehensive, quality services that meet the current needs of the community; innovation that anticipates future needs; and advocacy to improve the community as a whole.

The Adult Literacy Program provides ESOL classes and Technology classes to immigrant adults in New York City. University Settlement provides a comprehensive network of services to over 10,000 people of all ages living in the Lower East Side. Its broad network of activities includes adult literacy classes; mental health counseling and intensive case management; group and family daycare; support services to the formerly homeless; job training; after-school and summer camp programs for children and teens; a senior center; and a credit union.


Responsibilities:

  • Work with office staff to gather outcome data about students in our program
  • Input data about students and outcomes into ASISTS database
  • Handle orientation, intake and record-keeping procedures.
  • Participate in State and staff mandated workshops
  • Do follow-up surveys as required by the program
  • Help students with referrals to other training programs and other education programs
  • Work with teachers and other staff to ensure that students goals are met
  • Work with counselors to prepare activities for families

Qualifications:
High School diploma or HSE required, some college a plus
Bilingual required (Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, or Russian preferred)


Hours: P/T 17 hours per week, Saturday and Sunday 9:00am-5: 00 pm, plus 3 more hours to be determined on weekdays


Salary: $17.59 per hour
