Program Director- Adult Literacy

As the first settlement house in the nation and for over 130 years, University Settlement has been empowering New York residents by building on their strengths through comprehensive, quality services that meet the current needs of the community; innovation that anticipates future needs; and advocacy to improve the community as a whole.

The Adult Literacy Program provides ESOL and Technology classes to immigrant adults in New York City. The Director will be responsible for the oversight and management of the program.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Supervise and mentor teachers, office assistants, and counselors
  • Write proposals for government funding and foundation grants and manage department budget
  • Complete reports and presentations and meetings, other requirements to maintain funding
  • Develop and audit program policies and curriculum
  • Train new staff on ASIST and other databases
  • Direct and coordinate all external program activities with external partnerships
  • Collaborate with the Development/Fundraising team to create program material for the community
  • Direct flow of information from the program to other Settlement programs
  • Run program staff development meetings
  • Willingness to be an advocate for your program, participants and community
  • You have a strong commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory and analytical skills and excellent oral and written communications skills
  • You're a leader, mentor, coach, and able to inspire others
  • You love working with people and are a relationship builder
  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years' experience in related field

Hours: 35 hours per week, with some evening and weekend hours needed
