Census Outreach Worker

As the first settlement house in the nation and for over 130 years, University Settlement has been empowering New York residents by building on their strengths through comprehensive, quality services that meet the current needs of the community; innovation that anticipates future needs; and advocacy to improve the community as a whole.

With 31 sites across lower Manhattan and Northern Brooklyn, University Settlement aims to marry high-quality direct services with advocacy and community engagement all through a social justice lens. Therefore, we are perfectly placed to contribute to the push for a full count of our neighborhoods in the 2020 Census. As the Outreach Worker, you will motivate and inspire our internal and external partners and community members in our hard to count neighborhoods on the importance of a full census count and design and implement creative ways to use community connections and technology to increase census participation. You will work in Manhattan and Brooklyn part-time until June 2020.


Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate external and internal partnerships
  • Assist with the design implementation of community outreach, education events and door-knocking to increase the number of New Yorkers counted in the 2020 census
  • Outcomes tracking
  • Support programs to integrate outreach and community engagement into their daily program operations
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Must Haves:

  • You must be creative, flexible, and VERY ORGANIZED
  • Able to appreciate and work within a diverse team
  • Able to work independently
  • Fluency in a second language a plus
  • Comfort with designing materials and social media
  • You have a strong commitment to community engagement and to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion

Rate: $20 per hour


Hours: 20 hours per week, generally business hours but flexibility required for events, and meetings
