Overview: University Settlement is one of New York City's most dynamic social justice institutions, with an impressive legacy as the first settlement house in the nation. For 130 years, University Settlement has been an anchor in the low-income and immigrant communities where we work, offering pioneering programs in early childhood care and education, youth development, eviction prevention, literacy, theater and visual arts, senior services, and mental health. Each year, we engage over 40,000 New Yorkers through our network of 31 sites in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Our mission is to empower the individuals we serve through comprehensive, quality services that strengthen families and meet the current needs of the community.
Project Home is a blended program that combines the following services: homelessness prevention for families and individuals at-risk of eviction; general short-term housing counseling and social services; leadership development and advocacy. We are part of University Settlement, a community-based, multi-service agency that has served the Lower East Side community since 1886. Benefits Case Worker is a shared position between Project Home and The Door, our sister youth development organization. The Door offers integrated, wraparound services free of charge to any NYC young person between the ages of 12 – 23 including: reproductive health care, mental health counseling, legal assistance, college prep, career development, sports and recreational activities, to name a few.
The Benefits Case Worker will provide direct services to young people and their families to help connect them to any and all benefits and entitlement which they may be eligible. Direct services will include (but not be limited to): application assistance and advocacy for apply for or maintain: Public Assistance, food stamps, medical insurance, any relevant housing subsidies.
Hours: 35 hours per week, generally business hours but flexibility required for emergency services.
Salary: high 30s to low 40s depending upon experience, plus generous benefits package.
