Managing Director, Human Resources

Working in a shared service environment, the Managing Director for Human Resource will work with The Door, Broome Street Academy, and University Settlement, three independent 501c3's that share a CEO and administrative/back-office functions. University Settlement (www.universitysettlement.org), The Door (www.door.org), and Broome Street Academy (www.broomestreetacademy.org) are affiliated New York City nonprofits that tackle the complex issues surrounding poverty for over 50,000 New Yorkers each year.

The Managing Director for Human Resource is a pivotal role for our three organizations with over 1,000 employees. You are a skilled human resource professional and responsible for all human resources functions including recruitment and retention, compensation, employee relations, professional development, and benefits. You will develop relationships and work closely with the executive team and senior leaders to ensure that HR strategies and key initiatives are in support of agency missions, in line with current cultural and organizational best practices, and offer a high level of support for the staff of the organizations. You will serve as a senior leader on our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and play a key role in accountability around DEI goals and building a culture of inclusivity and belonging across the three organizations.

You are an expertise in all functions within the HR department, demonstrate strong leadership abilities, and can oversee a fast-paced multi-faceted organization. You will not only serve three agencies but also lead seven HR professionals.


What You Will Be Doing:
Employee Relations
You will counsel and coach managers on employment-related issues including hiring and recruitment, performance management, talent development, employee relations, and interpretation of HR policies and procedures. You will support both newly hired and seasoned managers. You are the key liaison with labor organizations and ensure compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Talent Management
You will provide leadership and guidance to the recruitment team (HR Manager for Recruitment and Retention and Recruitment Specialist) in the areas of recruitment and onboarding, retention, compensation, performance management, and labor relations. You will support the team in developing and implementing initiatives that support the agency's DEI goals, including building a pool of diverse and qualified candidates across all levels of the organizations. You will develop a plan to ensure that the organizations stay competitive with the field and strategize to maintain an environment of equal employment opportunity, diversity and equity, and competitive advantage while attracting a diverse and highly qualified workforce.

Compliance
You will work alongside HR and management staff to ensure that the agencies' policies, procedures and practices create a safe, consistent, fair, and inclusive environment. You will work with programs to meet specific compliance measures mandated by program funders. You will develop and implement new trainings in response to emerging trends and best practices.

Benefits
You will supervise and monitor employee benefits programs. You will assess and analyze ways to improve existing benefits while reducing cost and serve as Plan Administrator for retirement plans and ensure the organization is in compliance.


What We Are Looking For:

  • You have 15+ years of HR experience, with 5+ years in a managerial capacity and experience with labor unions.
  • You're a leader and able to inspire a multi-faceted organization and team.
  • You have strong management, problem-solving, and collaborative skills.
  • You are analytical and can interpret and communicate data.
  • You have a Bachelor's degree; a plus if you have a master's in human resources management.
  • You have a strong commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
