Donor Relations Associate

Supervisor: Managing Director of Institutional Advancement

The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly 11,000 New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition to adulthood.

The Donor Relations Associate is part of a dynamic team focused on maximizing support from individual donors and through events to support the best-in-class work of The Door, University Settlement and Broome Street Academy Charter High School. These three affiliate organizations share a common commitment to assisting the most vulnerable New Yorkers to transform their lives through innovative and effective programs. Working with the Managing Director of Institutional Advancement, the CEO, and other executive staff, the Donor Relations Associate works to create and implement a strategy to engage individuals in our organizations, in addition to helping with the planning and execution of fundraising events. The organization is seeking to grow individual giving efforts to ultimately develop a strong major donor program and the Donor Relations Associate will be at the forefront of implementing this signature effort.


  • In conjunction with the Managing Director of Institutional Advancement, develop and implement a well-coordinated giving program designed to cultivate and solicit support from individuals, with a focus towards major gifts
  • Conduct research and analysis for donor prospects on wealth capacity and inclination to give. May include project work around identifying and selecting vendor/technology to support research work
  • Manage the planning and execution of postal and email appeal campaigns, annual report, and other special projects in collaboration with the marketing and communications team and development associate(s)
  • Lead or support the development of communication tools for board members (i.e., quarterly meetings development updates), crafting of proposals and organizational content for prospective individual donor solicitations, and assisting with content for fundraising events (i.e., talking points, presentations, testimonies)
  • Oversee the development, management, and implementation of an individual donor recognition plan including the timely acknowledgement and follow-up for all individual donors and prospects
  • In partnership with the development associate(s), oversee the management of the organization's donor database with a special focus on individual donors and prospects
  • In collaboration with the grants and special events teams, manage and evolve the current volunteer program to create a strong pipeline of individual (and corporate) donors
  • Periodically provide administrative support to the Managing Director of Institutional Advancement and CEO


  • Bachelor's degree from accredited institution required
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in non-profit major gifts fundraising, donor development, or annual fund development essential; experience developing and implementing fundraising events of all sizes
  • Demonstrated experience in closing gifts and/or staffing a major giving effort 
  • Superior organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication (oral and written – in particular, editing) skills; demonstrated experience creating and managing donor communications, events, and engagement plans
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; adept at working 1:1 with individual donors, boards of directors, corporate personnel, volunteers, VIPs and other entities
  • Experience conducting prospect research and creating a pipeline of (major donor) prospects
  • Exemplary organizational skills; knowledge of how to use a database to track and leverage donor information
  • Excellent computing skills (i.e., MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint) and experience with Raiser's Edge (or comparable donor database) required
  • Self-motivated, high-energy personality essential
  • Ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team
  • Must be available for occasional evening events
  • Commitment to the missions of University Settlement, The Door and Broome Street Academy

Hours: 35 hours per week

Salary: Mid 40s-  55K, plus generous benefits
