Sucess Mentor

Supervisor: Community Schools Director

As the first settlement house in the nation and for over 130 years, University Settlement has been empowering New York residents by building on their strengths through comprehensive, quality services that meet the current needs of the community; innovation that anticipates future needs; and advocacy to improve the community as a whole.

One in five New York City students is chronically absent, missing more than 18+ days of school during the school year. Missing school drastically affects a student's learning and outcomes in academics and connectedness with their community. Research shows that chronically absent students who have been assigned a Success Mentor gain, an average, 13+ days of school compared to the year prior. Students who are not chronically absent are more likely to have higher GPAs, more likely to attend college, and feel more connected to their school community. As the Success Mentor, you will partner with chronically absent youth to address barriers that keep them from attending school every day. You will support and help them to reach their education goals.
