Group Leader- Learning Lab (Manhattan sites)

As the first settlement house in the nation and for over 130 years, University Settlement has been empowering New York residents by building on their strengths through comprehensive, quality services that meet the current needs of the community; innovation that anticipates future needs; and advocacy to improve the community as a whole.

University Settlement operates after-school programs for elementary and middle school children at several sites in Brooklyn and Manhattan. These programs provide academic support; artistic, cultural, and athletic enrichment; therapeutic services; and opportunities for family involvement. In partnership with the Department of Education, Learning Lab is a new program that will provide free childcare options for children from K through 8th grade on days when they are scheduled for remote learning. The Learning Bridges program will provide opportunities for children to connect to their remote learning activities and will also include time for art, recreation, and other age-appropriate activities. Learning Bridges will follow the same rigorous health and safety precautions as schools.

The Group Leader is responsible for developing and implementing skill-specific curricula in arts and recreation as well as guiding and assisting students through their virtual learning daily activities. The Group Leader is also responsible for engaging and supervising students, implementing strict safety procedures and program policies and supporting the daily operations of the Learning Bridges Program.


What You Will Be Doing:

  • Create and lead engaging activities for children or youth, ensuring safety and comfort of
  • Guide and assist students through their virtual learning daily activities provided by the Department of Education
  • Build strong and positive relationships with students in the Learning Lab Program
  • Collaborate with team to create and implement curriculum to build arts and interpersonal skills
  • Assist in serving breakfast & lunch to students
  • Ensure strict safety policies are always being implemented and followed
  • Communicate with Director regarding progress of students
  • Collect and maintain comprehensive, up-to-date, and accurate records, including attendance
  • Assist the facilities staff in set-up and clean-up of daily activities, including sanitizing supplies and surfaces
  • You have a strong commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion.

What We Are Looking For:

  • You are 18 years old or older.
  • You have a High School diploma or HSE. A plus if you have a Bachelor's in Education or related field.
  • You have 2+ years previous experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in program development, arts, curriculum design, and lesson plan writing.
  • You know that communication is key.
  • You take initiative and can work as part of a team.
  • Creativity, flexibility, and commitment
  • A plus if you are Bi-lingual in English/Cantonese or Spanish.
  • Willingness to be an advocate for your program, participants and community

Hours: Monday – Friday, 35 hours a week; Must be available to work 9/21- 6/30.


Pay: $16.50 per hour, with benefits
