Activity Specialist- Step Instructor

Supervisor: Program Director

University Settlement has been providing a variety of effective and strengths-based community based programs for children grades 6-12. The Activity Specialist will be responsible for facilitating workshops while ensuring the safety and engagement of children. The program will provide academic support; artistic, athletic, cultural, and athletic enrichment; therapeutic services; and opportunities for family involvement.


Responsibilities:

  • Activity Specialist will work with groups of 20-25 middle school students
  • Teach students a wide range of skills necessary for stepping 
  • Be able to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoke word and hand claps
  • Organize, lead, and promote interest in daily step activities such as warm-up, rhythmic practice, center activity and combinations as well as activities that lead to full performance pieces, and workshops outside the site to enhance and further learning
  • Create an environment of active and genuine learning by employing a range of teaching strategies that meet the needs of all students
  • Integrate young people's life experiences with thematic curriculum
  • Write, revise and implement lesson plans using DYCD framework for approval by director
  • Monitor and report on students' progress throughout the term of the activity
  • Projects should incorporate career awareness activities including field trips and guest speakers as well as community outreach and involvement

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and previous experience teaching/ facilitating step classes
  • High School Diploma or HSE required 
  • Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Attend planning, supervision, and evaluation sessions
  • Strong communication skills
  • Must be responsible, reliable and punctual
  • Ability to commit for the entire school year
  • Must be over 18 years old
  • Highly energetic, dynamic, and positive

Hours: 4 hours per week; Monday to Thursday, 2:30-3:30PM


Salary: $20.50 per hour
