University Settlement's Beacon Program provides young people with opportunities that bolster their self confidence, open their eyes to future options, and nurture a sense of belonging within the larger community.

The Beacon Program serves 1,200 community members every year by offering summer camp and after-school activities for middle school and high school students.  Youth can participate in the following activities throughout the year:

  • Homework Help & Tutoring
  • City-Wide Champion Soccer Program (with a brand new, state-of-the-art soccer pitch)
  • Football
  • Cheerleading
  • Track & Field
  • Skateboarding
  • Visual & Performing Arts
  • Music Lessons (including guitar)
  • Award-Winning Chess Program
  • Field Trips
  • And more!

Through the Beacon's internship and leadership opportunities, young people were employed over the summer, many of whom retained their jobs for the school year. Our summer program also allows participants to focus on a particular skill or hobby of their choice so they can develop it to a higher level.

All Beacon services are free of charge and free space is provided to neighborhood groups with special programs for adults and families.

Our Beacon makes its home within East Side Community High School, located at 420 East 12th Street, between 1st Avenue and Avenue A.
