Early Head Start


Nominated for consideration as a National Center of Excellence in Early Childhood Education, the Early Head Start program provides child care services to eligible families with children under age three with comprehensive center-based programs and home visits. Our eligibility requirements are listed to the right.

We believe that parents are a child's first and most important teachers and are true partners in University Settlement's Early Head Start Program. Families and staff work together to design a comprehensive and effective plan that will ensure each child's individual goals are met. Services include:

University Settlement Early Head Start

  • Pre– and post-natal education, screenings and referrals
  • Health, safety, nutrition and mental health services
  • Developmental assessments & screenings
  • Early learning classroom-based sessions for infants & toddlers
  • Parent education & support groups
  • Parent-child socialization groups
  • Special needs education & referrals (full inclusion of children with special needs)
  • Home-visiting services to support healthy family development
  • Social service advocacy & referrals

Parents and children receive TWO home visits per month (90 minutes apiece) and either parent-child socialization groups each Friday (90 minutes) OR infant/toddler classroom groups twice a week (either Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

Our Early Head Start program has also collaborated with the renowned Ackerman Institute for the Family to implement a parent-child program to support social-emotional development and school readiness. We encourage you to consider enrolling while pregnant to take full advantage of the many benefits our Early Head Start program has to offer!

Services are available in English, Spanish, Cantonese and Mandarin.
