New Museum Family Day: On the Wall

Saturday, February 17, 2007, 1-5PM
University Settlement @ the Houston Street Center
273 Bowery (at the corner of Houston)

** This event is FREE and open to the public. **

On Saturday, February 17, the New Museum of Contemporary Art will host Family Day: On the Wall, an exciting afternoon of free art activities designed to introduce children and members of the community to the Museum and the methods and motives of contemporary art.

Between 1 and 5PM, children ages six and older are invited to drop in at the University Settlement @ the Houston Street Center to join artists, volunteers and educators in the creation of a community art project. Guided by artist Ahmed Faheem, and using his exhibition entitled The Dream as inspiration, children and their families will learn about mural making concepts, techniques and materials.

A recurring theme in Faheem’s work is the celebration of cultural intersections in a globalized world, how the ancient seeks to be new while the modern world strives to embrace heritage. His current work is about understanding these intersections through art installations.

Collectively, participants will work to create a constantly changing, thoughtful, large-scale mural that projects their ideas of the neighborhood and the role art plays in the community. The final mural project, consisting of drawing, painting and collage, will go on public display at the Houston Street Center.

Family Day: On the Wall is generously supported by Altria.

About the New Museum
In 2007, the New Museum will open a new home at 235 Bowery at Prince Street. This 60,000 square foot facility, designed by the Tokyo-based firm Sejima + Nishizawa/SANAA, will greatly expand the Museum’s exhibitions and programs, and will be the first art museum constructed in Downtown New York in the city’s modern history.
