News & Events » Author Rita Williams Garcia Visits Beacon

Rita Williams Garcia visited the Beacon Program October 16th, 17th, and 19th. During her time at the Beacon she met with each grade of our elementary program and read excerpts from two of her books, Diamond Land and Catching The Wild Wayuuzee. Ms. Garcia also signed copies of her books for the students. In addition to meeting with the elementary students, Rita also spoke to a group of approximately 40 middle school and high school students from East Side Community High School. She spoke to the students about her writing process and answered their questions about her books. Ms. Garcia is a prolific writer of young adult books; among her most popular are Blue Tights, No Laughter Here, Every Time a Rainbow Dies, and Like Sisters on the Homefront. Her visit culminated in a celebration in which the elementary students presented her with "The Wild Wayuuzee" masks they created. Copies of her books were donated to the program courtesy of the National Book Foundation.
