Overview:

University Settlement, established in 1886 in the Lower East Side, has launched its largest new site in over 100 years. In a unique partnership with the Chinatown YMCA, the Settlement owns and operates the 42,000 square-foot Houston Street Center that includes recreational, fitness, classroom, meeting and office space for the community. The Youth Development Specialist is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing grade-specific, project-based, and dynamic curriculum in her/his respective track (i.e. arts and culture, leadership development, or health and wellness). The Youth Development Specialist is also responsible for engaging and supervising youth, assisting with the creation of policies and procedures, developing and maintaining relationships with local CBOs and schools, and supervising the daily operations of the program.

Responsibilities:
  • Build strong and positive relationships with young people (ages 11-14) in the STRIDE Youth Program
  • Design, develop, and implement grade-specific programming and curriculum for health and wellness, arts and culture, and/or leadership development
  • Plan and coordinate workshops, activities, field trips, guest speakers, and special events
  • Conduct intakes and educational assessments with youth
  • Facilitate youth involvement in the planning and implementation of special projects and special events
  • Develop outreach materials and actively recruit young people
  • Design and implement assessment and evaluation tools
  • Supervise youth in the space at all times
  • Establish regular communication with guardians via phone or in-person meetings regarding progress of youth
  • Collect and maintain comprehensive, up-to-date, and accurate records, including outcome measures, attendance, and academic progress notes
  • Work closely with other University Settlement programs, The Door, local CBOs, and schools for referrals and collaborative opportunities
  • Work with the Assistant Director to create program policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling or related field preferred
  • Strong youth development background and previous experience working with young adolescents (ages 11-14) from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong background in program development, curriculum design, and lesson plan writing
  • Sensitivity to multi-cultural issues
  • Previous experience working in youth programs, community outreach/recruitment and/or community-based organizations
  • Ability to work effectively with schools and CBOs
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with participants, guardians, and school/CBO staff
  • Self-directed and able to work as part of a team
  • Creativity, flexibility, and commitment
  • Bilingual Spanish/English and/or Chinese/English highly preferred
Hours:

17 hours, Mondays through Fridays, after-school hours.

Salary:

$15-20 per hour
