Overview:

University Settlement, established in 1886 in the Lower East Side, has launched its largest new site in over 100 years. In a unique partnership with the Chinatown YMCA, the Settlement owns and operates a 42,000 square-foot community facility that includes recreational, fitness, classroom, meeting and office space for the community. The Group Aide will assist in escorting youth through the Community Center from space to space, and supervising youth throughout the Community Center.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist Teaching Artists during classes and workshops by participating in activities, distributing and gathering supplies, monitoring behavior, modeling cooperation and teamwork and other tasks necessary for program implementation
  • Co-facilitate activities for program youth when needed
  • Assist with academic support and tutoring when needed
  • Escort youth throughout the Houston Street Center (including locker rooms) to ensure that youth are supervised at all times
  • Escort youth during off-site field trips to ensure safety at all times
  • Work with Assistant Director and Group Leaders to provide crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and address behavioral issues
  • Check-in and check-out youth at beginning and end of program hours
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of daily youth attendance
  • Call parents/guardians to follow up on youth absences
  • Ensure that designated adults are picking up designated child(ren) at the end of program hours
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and other duties as assigned by supervisor
Qualifications:
  • At least a high school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 2 years experience working with youth ages 11-14 and their families
  • Ability to maintain structure among group of youth during off-site travel and within a community center facility
  • Ability to communicate with parents/guardians
  • Ability to work individually and with a team of other staff
  • Flexibility and patience
  • Strong organizational skills and communication skills
  • Experience working with after-school youth programs
  • Experience working with community-based organizations and/or familiarity with the Lower East Side/Chinatown community
  • Bi-lingual Spanish and/or Chinese preferred
Hours:

Approx. 15 hours per week; Seasonal, Sept.-June.

Salary:

$8-$10/hour
