Position Description:

Through the NYS Office of Children & Family Services, University Settlement has received funding to implement a Healthy Families Program in the 10009 and 10035 zip codes. Through home-based visiting, University Settlement will strengthen parents’ skills and parent-child relationships primarily through intensive individualized home visits that start during pregnancy. Integrating innovative and holistic approaches to health, including yoga and infant massage, our aim is to decrease parental stress, increase self confidence and parenting skills in order to stabilize the family and integrate a healthy focus on child development within family life. The Family Support Worker is responsible for initiating and maintaining a regular and sustainable supportive relationship with at-risk families via home based services.

Responsibilities:
  • Through home visits, engage at-risk families and develop relationships based on a strengths-based model
  • Provide daily support and crisis management skills to families
  • In partnership with families create a plan with attainable goals to decrease risk factors in the home
  • Maintain thorough written records of home visits, family goals, and all required documentation
  • Work collaboratively with community resources and advocate for the family, when necessary
  • Carry an average caseload. Must be willing to travel via public transportation throughout Manhattan
  • Participate in staff meetings, case conferences, training seminars and individual supervisory meetings
  • Other duties as assigned by program supervisor or program manager
Qualifications:
  • B.A/B.S. degree required
  • Experience in the human/social services field preferred
  • Interest in learning innovative treatment strategies in the areas of strengths-based, family centered provisions of service
  • Interest in learning & integrating holistic approaches to health and well-being in working with families
  • Ability to relate to culturally diverse families from a strengths-based, family centered model, particularly in highly disorganized home environments
  • Capacity to foster a supportive environment for families, and function effectively during stressful situations
  • Experience in preventive services, home visiting and/or early childhood development
  • Knowledge of child abuse & neglect identification and reporting
  • Sensitivity to the needs of culturally diverse communities and families
  • Capacity to function as a member of an interdisciplinary team
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Chinese required
Hours:

Full time, 35 hrs /week

Salary:

High $20K, with a generous benefit package
